I wasn't sure from reading it though what using the blockchain really adds to the gaming experience, other than lots of extra steps at the start which make it harder for new people to join? Creating, trading, battling - those are all features that exist in other online games that are 100% blockchain free.
So, basically two things. One is that the individual monsters are unique — the developer itself can't simply issue more of them, as you'd find with Pokemon. And two, those monsters can be sold outside the game itself. Most digital objects can only be sold within the world of the game; your assets in Axie are portable. There are definitely people who say that you don't need the blockchain for this; at the moment, though, no one seems to have built anything comparable using web technology.
